i have a new favourite website

this is for all of you with kids.  i have a favourite new website.  it’s called OFFSPRUNG and it is where the cool kids hang out.

let me tell you all the things that i like about it.

  • liberal viewpoints.  not that it is a “liberal” website, or at least labeled as such.  but from what i gather, most people active on the forums (the Playground) definitely swing to left.  also, the regular columnists are quite liberal.  (i suppose writing a column on GLBT parenting, you would almost have to be a liberal!!)
  • people write in full sentences and use actual words.  this is HUGE for me because one of the things that totally turned me off from places like cafemom is the fact that there are so many people who write in text speak, or in all caps with no punctuation.  i’m not a stickler about proper grammar, but some grammar is good.
  • Drama free without it having to be stated as such.  i hate going to websites that have had so much drama that rules actually have to be put up.  the people on the Playground are all really nice and respectful of other people’s views and opinions.  there is no drama.  none.  zip.
  • funny and relevant columns.  ‘nough said.
  • topics are not limited to parenting.  although it is a site for parents, i like to think of it as a place filled with like-minded individuals who happen to have kids.  sure, we talk about our kids, but it is not all that we talk about.  politics, environment, stupid celebrity kids names…it’s all there.

so, that is where i am when not scouring the depths of my soul for something to blog about.  check it out.  we don’t bite!!

    What does it mean to be a leftie in the US? As a continental European that lives in the UK I find that the British left-wing is a bit mild, I have been told that the American one is even milder. Kind of ineffective “radical chic” snobbery that does not go beyond moaning. I am sure this is a bit of a prejudice, isn’t it?

    oh yes!! basically, “left-wing” means Liberal. for some reason, which is beyond my comprehension, the right-wing republicans like to portray liberals as “elitists”, which makes NO sense to me. we believe in things like civil rights and liberties (bush apparently doesn’t), taking care of the environment, helping people when it is needed, gay rights, freedom…you know things like that. we practice these things, while the republicans like to SAY they like these things, but consistently do all they can to prevent the american public from actually having freedoms. think domestic wire-tapping, systematically making abortions more and more illegal, christian fundamentalism, corporate greed and kick backs, cutting education funding while throwing BILLIONS of dollars a day at a war we will never win with an elusive enemy. republicans talk a big game of fiscal responsibly and smaller government, but do the exact opposite by overspending our tax dollars (war, again, among other things) and trying to force their christian ideals and morals on the public through legislation in the name of “family values”. this could be a whole new post, so i will leave it at that. :)
